Restoring a WWII Veteran's Dress Blues: A Family's Request

A family in Northern Virginia contacted us after their grandfather's WWII dress uniform was damaged in a basement flood. The uniform, complete with original medals and patches, held immeasurable sentimental value.

The Challenge

Water damage to vintage military textiles requires specialized expertise. The wool fabric had absorbed significant moisture, and early signs of mildew were appearing on the sleeve cuffs. The metal medals and buttons showed signs of oxidation.

Conservation Approach

Our textile conservators used controlled drying techniques specifically designed for vintage wool. The uniform was gently cleaned using conservation-grade solvents, and the medals were carefully treated for oxidation. Each stitch and seam was inspected and reinforced where needed.

A Family Treasure Preserved

The restored uniform was returned to the family in archival-quality storage. The grandson later told us it was displayed at a Veterans Day ceremony — looking as dignified as the day it was worn.
